An urban and literate culture developed around 3500 BC in the lowland plain of the Indus river. Carefully planned cities complete with drainage schemes, ritual basins and citadels served as thriving centres of commerce and craftsmanship. Around 1800 BC the Indus cities fell into decline. They were abandoned and replaced by farming villages.
